A Retrospective of Fang Liu (Summer)'s Curatorial Practice

27/9/2024

Fang Liu (Summer) is an independent curator and creative organiser based in London. Her practice extends across contemporary art, cultural studies and space-based narratives, with a core focus on ecological aesthetics and collective memory. Having established the Zero to One art platform in 2020, Fang Liu continues to explore the visibility of Chinese contemporary art within international contexts, engaging in curatorial practice to foster multiple-dimensional dialogue between art, audiences and the cultural industries. Zero to One is grounded in the philosophical principle that ‘The Tao gives birth to One, One gives birth to Two, Two gives birth to Three, and Three gives birth to all things.’ The circular form in Zero to One’s logo symbolises Eastern cyclical thinking, with the linear elements representing Western logical thinking. These two elements blend harmoniously within the space, forming a neutral, cross-cultural field that also evokes her curatorial exploration of integrating Eastern philosophy with Western methodologies.

From its establishment, Zero to One has curated a series of sensory-rich, profoundly reflective exhibitions. Early projects focused on the boundaries between body and environment, nature and technology, constructing immersive spaces through video, installation, sound, and live performance. Audiences were invited to reconsider relationships between humans and the environment through embodied experience. Her curatorial approach has further evolved to emphasise cross-disciplinary collaboration and perceptual resonance. Her projects extend beyond visual art to integrate sound, performance, and participatory public programmes, rendering the art space a field for embodied knowledge and shared experience.

Fang Liu has sustained her exploration of themes such as rebirth, perceptual flux, and cultural memory over recent years. Her curated exhibition series, through profound observations of ecosystems, social psychology, and bodily perception, transcends traditional art display boundaries, audience, and artwork within an interactive relationship. These curatorial practices emphasise participation, environmental awareness, and narrative fluidity, rendering each piece as a visual presentation and a trigger for audience perception and reflection.

Meanwhile, as co-founder and artistic director of Asian Girls Club, Fang Liu focuses on the creative expression and identity of Asian female artists. Through exhibitions, performances, and cross-disciplinary public events, she creates visibility for culturally marginalised groups, reconstructing social narratives within public spaces. With a sensitive and fluid curatorial logic, she forms a contemporary art field that combines cultural criticality with poetic energy.

In 2024, Fang Liu will join London Art Collective as a signed curator. This collaboration will expand her platform and resources within the international art ecosystem, as well as provide a broader space for her cross-cultural and interdisciplinary curatorial experiments. Her curatorial philosophy and practice will gain access to richer public and academic spheres.

Fang Liu's curatorial practice and projects continually explore the relationships between humanity and the environment, technology and nature, and the individual and the collective. Her initiatives extend beyond presenting artworks; through space, narrative, and perceptual reconfiguration, they transform public spaces into vessels for sharing knowledge and fostering cultural transformation. Her curatorial logic, blending philosophical depth with sensory awareness, investigates how art can redefine human interaction with the world.
