About the work

'Double Nature' explores two sides of femininity and the constant fight within oneself. One figure embodies a harsher, more masculine femininity: dominant, confrontational and visibly winning. The other is softer, gentler and more submissive. As both figures share my face, their fight also represents an internal conflict, between present reality and emotions shaped by past experiences, and the ongoing effort to overcome them. Boxing is deeply personal to me: I began young and later became a qualified coach. At the very beginning of 2026, my first boxing coach, who introduced me to the sport and made me love it, passed away in brutal circumstances. The painting now also carries his memory and the part of my identity he helped shape.

Sofia Laskari

I am a London-based figurative painter and UAL graduate (2023). I paint myself, but I don’t really paint self-portraits. My body and features become a recurring character through which I explore femininity, vulnerability and our relationship with the body. Working primarily in oil, I combine realism with drawing, pattern and experimental interventions. I was named UK New Artist of the Year 2023 and became the youngest artist to present a solo exhibition at Saatchi Gallery with Body and Flesh (2024). I also participated in Sky Arts’ Portrait Artist of the Year and won the Beyond Future Art Prize 2024. My work has been exhibited and collected internationally.
