Based on neural network models of how we see, the full title of this work is The mind's eye concealed by emergent properties; networks in cognition.
We do not understand how cognitive processes lead to emergent properties of seeing and thinking. Scientists use many models to research how our brains work, but the complexity is overwhelming. We are nowhere near fully understanding how the stuff of brains (neurons, glial cells and the vascular system) works together to form our experience of the world around us. Neural network models (the basis of artificial intelligence) may be closer to representing how the brain works, but how well they represent the emergent properties of cognitive function is difficult to measure.
I am a contemporary UK artist known for science-inspired work. Over my life I have tried to balance my artistic practice with my scientific career, (dementia research in the population), integrating complex ideas into both abstract and structured designs that blend scientific meditation with artistic expression using various artistic techniques. I have exhibited internationally in group exhibitions. I am currently exploring ideas relating to evolution via printmaking.
