Oil on canvas.
This work was based on a photo from her own childhood, but the children's dresses changed to the same color, and no one was laughing. The composition deliberately cuts out the upper part to express the girls' instability. The true protagonist is the mother, who is not depicted.
Women oppressed in male-dominated societies tend to become dominant over their daughters. Love and dominance are synonymous. Girls are expected to be “kawaii”, to pretend to be powerless and featureless.
Sachiko Shimojo is an artist born in Tokyo.
