Seaweed Phytogram on Super 8 Film, Sound

About the work

'Shoreline' is an investigation into coastal and tidal rhythms. The surface of the film mirrors the rolling, cascading velocity of waves and water.

‍

Seaweed gathered from the beach at low tide was soaked in a solution of seawater, washing soda, and vitamin C powder before being placed directly onto fogged Super 8 film.

‍

The phytogram process allows for the found organic matter to chemically interact with the film emulsion; producing fluid, unpredictable marks that evoke shifting currents, tumbling foam, sediment, and the continual motion of water.

‍

The resulting images are not representations of the sea but instead are physical traces of its memory.
