'At the Hour of the Shimmering Sunset' explores a moment in which perception hovers between recognition and uncertainty. Layers of luminous colour, fragmented forms and reflected light merge into an unstable scene, where familiar objects seem to emerge before dissolving back into abstraction.
The painting began intuitively, allowing fluid marks, colour and accidental forms to develop before gradually responding to what appeared on the surface. Warm oranges and yellows collide with flashes of turquoise and shifting reflections, evoking the transient intensity of sunset—an hour when ordinary surroundings can briefly appear unfamiliar or transformed.
The work reflects my broader interest in the threshold between the visible and invisible, and in how perception turns ambiguous information into a particular reality. Rather than presenting a fixed image, the painting invites the viewer to move between possible readings, encountering forms that remain suspended between presence and disappearance.
Na young Lee is a London-based painter and holds an MA in Fine Art at Chelsea College of Arts, University of the Arts London.
She has exhibited at Weatherbys Private Bank and most recently participated in a group exhibition at The Bomb Factory Art Foundation. Her work has also been presented across Europe and in South Korea.
Her practice examines the relationship between the visible and the unseen, exploring how hidden structures, uncertainty, and perception shape the way reality is constructed. Working primarily in oil, she develops her paintings through layered processes in which forms emerge, recede, and reconfigure over time.
