'Shifting Presence Series One #07' is part of an ongoing photographic exploration that began in 2018. The work grew from my own uneasiness with being human - the feeling of constant change, searching for a sense of comfort, yet never quite able to remain still. I use the vessel as a metaphor for the body, allowing it to shift, fade, overlap and interact with itself. In doing so, the work reflects the restlessness of trying to find where we belong. The forms also suggest the way our lives become intertwined: relationships with family and friends, work and circumstance, constantly overlapping and reshaping who we are.
Michael Miller is a contemporary photographic artist whose practice centres on the abstraction of reality to explore ideas about being human. Working across photography and experimental image-making, he transforms familiar forms and subjects into ambiguous, visually poetic works that sit between representation and abstraction. His work has been exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra, Head On Photo Festival, Edmund Pearce Gallery Melbourne, the Moran Contemporary Photographic Prize and BBA Gallery Berlin. In 2018 he was voted Australia’s Top Emerging Art Photographer by Capture Magazine, and his work has received recognition from IPA, PX3 and D&AD.
