About the work

'no pasa nada' (translated: nothing is happening/nothing is wrong) was inspired by early 20th century North American animation. I was gripped by the blurring of boundaries between objects and subjects (the body of the animated subject as a malleable material) and between maturity and immaturity that characterizes so many cartoons from the 1920s-1930s. The hybrid figure here functions similarly, as a body that’s malleable, with no need of being seen as bound to the real or to contain an intelligible meaning.

I’m a Puerto Rican artist, currently based in London as I complete a Fine Art MFA. I have a BA in Multidisciplinary Arts from the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras campus. My practice consists of mixed media image-making, visualising personal explorations on the notion of embodiment. My works are populated by hybrid figures that embody the many axes of my sensual reality as a Puerto Rican, a woman, a person with a chronic illness and as someone on the asexual spectrum. Within my compositions, hybridity principally serves to challenge the centralization of gender, sex and desirability as modes for defining what it means to be human.
