In 'Black Water Odyssey', I intended to create a work that journeys deep into the inky black depths of memory and time, punctuated by contrasting mother-of-pearl highlights. For me, the work is anchored in solace, melancholy, and a foreboding silence that paradoxically laments, transcends, and fades to black. I find beauty in this darkness.
When gazing into the work, I zone out and experience transitional states: the water seems to turn to stone, then to a black seabed, then to thick black oil, whilst shining like stars in the night sky. There is a violent beauty in these meditations that seems to render the timelessness I’m searching for in photography. Water is a living, dynamic system that sustains life, culture, and memory.
