About the work

'Power Play' recasts the form of a military tank through soft, pink, feminine-coded materials. Lace is used in place of the visual language normally associated with armour, aggression and military authority, creating an object that feels simultaneously playful, seductive and confrontational.

‍

The work challenges assumptions about how power and femininity are coded and recognised. Rather than positioning strength and softness as opposites, 'Power Play' allows them to rupture and merge, each altering the meaning of the other. The work takes up space unapologetically, refusing the idea that power must abandon softness, beauty or femininity to become imposing.

Katie Parker

Katie Parker is a British multidisciplinary artist living and working in Margate, UK. Trained in Fine Art, her practice is shaped by an interest in power, control, consumer culture and the systems that influence behaviour and desire. Using feminine-coded forms, familiar objects and materials, Parker creates works in which attraction and threat occupy the same space. Her practice explores how coercion can be disguised as aspiration, protection, beauty or choice, and how the things that promise freedom can become the structures that cage us.
