About the work

In the series Water + Night, the boundary between water and sky is explored as a literal and conceptual horizon. The reflective power of metal-work embroidery is used as an intimate medium to explore the reflective surface of celestial light on bodies of water. Much like telescopes utilise mirrors to gather light and form our images of the cosmos, bodies of water are here considered natural instruments though which we might come to develop alternative understandings of the cosmos. This embroidery traces shifting ‘moon circles,’ in which reflected moonlight separates into dancing points before converging again across the water’s surface.

Julie F Hill

Julie F Hill’s practice takes an expanded approach to photography to explore conceptions of deep-space and cosmological time. Her sculptural prints and installations create experiences of intimate immensity by collapsing distinctions between different temporal and spatial scales. She questions technologies of data capture, processes of knowledge production and how they shape ecological relations. Through materiality she highlights the intimate connections and exchanges between the organic and the inorganic; life and non-life; Earth and space, making places of contact with non-human agencies and intelligences.
