'Vexed Earth Rising' is a freestanding totemic sculpture that blends nature’s contours with modern sensibilities of colour and structure and invites viewers to reflect on the desire for mankind and nature to co-exist within a relationship of mutual respect.
The sculpture is hand-built in stoneware clay and black velvet glaze and constructed on a fabricated metal stand.
Jane Preston is a contemporary ceramic artist who creates sculptures inspired by nature’s shapes, balance and metaphors. Her practice is informed by the pain and pleasure of lived experience and explores communication through symbolic form, responding to the tension between human existence and the natural world.
Material experimentation is central to her work, and she investigates how surface, scale and form can evoke emotional responses. Ultimately, her practice is a way of giving physical identity to experiences that are often difficult to articulate, creating sculptural ceramic works that hold emotional presence and invite contemplation.
Jane is an Artist in Residence at Lee Alexander McQueen’s Sarabande Foundation and in 2026 has exhibited work at Collect 26, during a residency at Selfridges department store and in the shows ‘The Weight of Turning’ and ‘DESIRE: The Anatomy of Looking’.
