About the work

'Transition' is a series of photos that show the hope and determination of trans-woman Luci Fera.

‍

This image features Luci dancing in what was probably the best moment of her life. She had just undergone a very complicated gender change operation. In her own words she said she was very happy because she had 'nothing to hide'.

‍

Along with this image, the full series also includes a meditative portrait of her full of hope, another portrait of her holding her testicles in a jar and five blurred images that represent the tough times that Luci passed through to get to her gender change.

‍

Not so long after these images were taken, Luci was sadly diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and died in 2025.

Frank Balbi Hansen

Frank is a Venezuelan photographer with a background in architecture and design, based in London since 2010. In 2011 his work was selected for the Taylor Wessing photographic prize at National Portrait Gallery.

‍

In the late 70's he started photographing people and this is still the focus of his work. In 1982, his early black and white work was included in the 'First Exhibition of Contemporary Venezuelan Photography', at the Museo de Bellas Artes de Caracas.

‍

In the 2000's Frank documented the state of outdoor advertising in Caracas, as a direct effect of Chavez's Socialist government on the Venezuelan economy. Frank strongly believes that artists have a social responsibility and this is reflected in his current practice.
