About the work

'Sky Trees' is inspired by Charles's observation of Willie Howe in Yorkshire, an ancient mound crowned by a small group of trees. Struck by the simplicity of the landscape, he made a quick drawing of the scene, filling the form with yellow. This simple sketch became the starting point for a sculpture that transforms a familiar view into a bold and abstract form. The sculpture explores the connection between the canopy of the trees and the sky. It’s simple form captures the feeling of looking upward through the branches, reducing the landscape to its most essential elements.

Charles Haynes

Charles Haynes is a British contemporary sculptor working in mirrored stainless steel.

‍

His work draws inspiration from the natural world; clouds, trees, landscapes, capturing fleeting moments and translating them into sculptural form.

‍

At the centre of his practice is the challenge of translating organic, ever-changing subjects into flawless mirrored surfaces. This contrast between the unpredictability of nature and the precision demanded by polished stainless steel creates a distinctive tension throughout his work. The reflective finish allows each sculpture to continuously evolve with its environment, drawing in surrounding light, movement, and landscape while inviting viewers to see themselves within the piece.
