About the work

'Page 80' explores Rahimian's interest in the journeys objects undertake over time. Collecting discarded and second-hand books, he views each cover as a surface recording traces of use, handling and history.

‍

Treating these covers as both palette and artwork, he responds to their colours, textures and marks through subtle interventions. Fascinated by how books pass from shelf to shelf, owner to owner, he considers them repositories of memory and experience. Here, the cover is reduced to its essentials of colour, shape and surface, creating a striking abstract composition. Removed from its original function, the object becomes both artefact and image, inviting reflection on time, transformation and the stories embedded in everyday materials.

Arran Rahimian

Arran Rahimian is a Scottish artist whose practice explores time and mark making through painting, drawing and assemblage. Working across abstraction and observation, he is interested in how objects accumulate histories through use, movement and ownership. His ongoing work with found book covers investigates everyday materials as records of time, revealing traces of their journeys through colour, wear and surface texture. Alongside this, his paintings explore abstract compositions informed by his Persian heritage, where pattern, colour and rhythm play a significant role in the development of the work. More recently, becoming a father of two daughters has profoundly influenced his practice, encouraging a return to the freedom, spontaneity and curiosity of childhood drawing. Through this process, Rahimian revisits mark making as a means of reconnecting with imagination, memory and play, creating works that embrace instinct, exploration and the expressive possibilities of the painted surface.
