About the work

This painting explores the dynamics of power. The white fabric carries a sacred quality, and the objects it conceals create a sense of mystery. This "unknown" secrecy is a classic form of power. Two large golden hands appear to be applauding, and on a plane resembling a theatrical stage, a black sphere emerges—signifying a moment of genesis. The use of circular forms and symmetry, both rich with a sense of mysticism.

Zhijie Zhang

Zhijie is studying at Chelsea College of Arts. His work consistently explores power dynamics, using highly intuitive visuals to create a sacred and solemn atmosphere. In a sense, the experience of the sacred is rooted in its binary opposition to the mundane—it's a social construct, defined by people and shaped by society. At its core, it's the sensory expression of power's oppressive nature. He tries to use elements like symmetry, circles, and fabric, along with compositions imbued with mysticism, to examine how the visual representation of power evokes a sense of the sacred, while also carrying political undertones.
