The artwork "District Line #2" shows real-time movement on the London tube. Data was collected using using a high-speed video camera. The footage is reconstructed into layered time structures, creating imagery that reveals extended periods of time and unseen visual possibilities at the intersection of the digital and real worlds. Part documentary, part visual experiment, the imagery reveals the daily rhythm and pulse of cities, showing how time, technology, and human presence interlace in the contemporary metropolis.
The image is from from the ongoing series, "City Scans", captured in some of the world's largest cities: Tokyo, London, Hong Kong and Istanbul, several of which I have lived. This artwork has not been exhibited previously.
100 cm x 100 cm direct print on brushed aluminium (edition of 5 plus 2 AC)
I am a British audio-visual journalist. My arts practice is centered on contemporary life – how we live today. My work has always sought to reveal the "unseen."
Recently, I have been exploring the “liminal zone” – a place where the physical and digital worlds collide. I work with images, video, soundscape, voice, 3D models, and data clouds.
Until 2012, I was based in Hong Kong and Tokyo, where I carried out photojournalistic research that received several international awards and commendations, including Human Rights Press Awards and a UK Press Award.
Since returning to the UK, I have developed a body of hybrid media projects for the visual arts space.
My ongoing project "City Scans" captures the real-time movement of commuters and transport systems in Tokyo, Hong Kong, Istanbul, and London using high-speed video. The footage is reconstructed into layered time structures, creating imagery that reveals extended periods of time and unseen visual possibilities at the intersection of the digital and real worlds. Part documentary, part visual experiment, "City Scans" reveal the daily rhythm and pulse of cities, showing how time, technology, and human presence interlace in the contemporary metropolis.
My previous projects have been exhibited at the DOX Centre for Contemporary Art in Prague (Czech Republic), NordArt (Germany), Amgueddfa Cymru – Museum Wales (UK), Senedd Cymru/Welsh Parliament (UK), the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C. (USA), and the British Motor Museum (UK).
