About the work

This work reflects the colours of the two seasons Spring and Autumn. The work initially inspired on finding between the leaves and stems of an early daffodil a cluster of six ladybirds in early spring.   At that time was looking at utilise irregular canvas shapes and this shape was derived from a drawing of an upright daffodil which I then laid on its side to produce a linear timeline effect. The daffodil has six petals and looking into the flower was where the circular shape came from initially. Humanity has been making circles since ancient times with its intonation of oneness and mystery. Although the daffodil and ladybirds were the original inspiration, I wanted to create something which alluded to both seasons.  Having chosen the circle, I wanted to convey a sense of motion, because to me Spring and Autumn have always seemed the more transitory of the seasons, spring heralds’ summer as autumn heralds’ winter of both signifies the ending of winter and summer, the main events. They both truly have their beauty, but they seem like stepping-stones.  The sense of motion I wanted comes from changing the symmetrical appearance of the daffodil leaves withing the circles into shapes all flowing the same way.
