Rivers (Qinnan Zhu) is a fourth generation of female artisans, hailing from a long line of lace-makers. She believes that the makers' stories lie beneath the construction of historical techniques. Unpredictable and irreversible moments in the hand-making processes embody the hidden tension between programming and disorder. Her materials comprise a combination of what her kinswomen use and items that they were unable to utilise. From xiāoshān huābiān (Xiao shan needle lace-making) to jiǎo xié rǎn (pattern resisted on warp and weft before dyeing and weaving, like IKAT), she imbues her works with a poetic flow between now and then, and herself and them.
