This work explores cymatics, the phenomenon in which sound frequencies generate visible forms. Cymatics refers to the geometric patterns that emerge when specific frequencies interact with matter, capturing the moment when invisible vibrations are rendered into visual form. These frequencies carry a dual nature: they can temporarily disrupt sensory perception while also serving as a medium for physical restoration. This paradox—marked by dissonance and resolution, chaos and order—forms the core subject of the work.
Within this hybridity, the work searches for the possibility of a new kind of sensory thought. Frequencies, though fundamentally immaterial, make it possible to perceive hidden structures and systems of order that would otherwise remain unseen. The piece goes beyond merely visualizing a scientific phenomenon, instead evoking worlds that extend beyond the limits of ordinary perception.
Wonyoung Shim (b. 1997, Seoul) is an artist based between London and Seoul. Working across installation, sculpture, and sound, her practice explores subtle disruptions in everyday perception. Through spatial tension and non-linear composition, she creates immersive environments that reveal the fragile threshold between clarity and ambiguity.
Her work often engages with invisible and inaudible layers of experience, cultivating a slowed, attentive state at the edge of perception. In 2021, she was commissioned for the Amsa-Dong Local Revitalisation Project in Seoul, where she designed and fabricated a permanent public sculpture. Recent and upcoming exhibitions include Fables (Mall Galleries, London, 2025), Echoes of Stillness and Provisional We (The Handbag Factory, London, 2025), SOFT DATA (The Fitzrovia Gallery, London, 2025), and Seoul Ghost (Upper Gulbenkian Gallery, London, 2024).
Shim holds a BFA in Sculpture from the University of Seoul (2022) and graduated with an MA in Contemporary Art Practice from the Royal College of Art, London (2025).
